2.3 Solid Waste Reduction
Green Team Recycling Challenge
Students Involved in Planning: 4th and 5th grade students on the Fountaindale Green Team
Students Participating: Whole School
Description:During the Winter of 2017 the Green Team organized a month long recycling challenge. The students created a plan to increase participation in the recycling program at Fountaindale. They noticed that many students were putting non-recyclable materials in the recycling bins and they wanted to find a solution. The Green Team designed a challenge, organized students to keep track of recycling, and even designed award ribbons to give to classrooms that actively recycle their waste.
Students Involved: 3rd Grade Students
Description: 2016-Present We have a composting bin in our 3rd grade classroom for our extra breakfast fruit. We decided to use these worms to collect data when we were learning about measuring to the nearest ¼ inch. Each group dug through the compost to find worms and then they measured them. Finally, table groups collected their data on line plots as we connected math, measuring, and composting worms.
Students Involved: 4th Grade Green Team Members
Description: Two of the students in the 2017 Green Team wanted to help their fellow students to better understand their roles in recycling. They created a Google Slide presentation that was shared with classrooms. The presentation help students by explaining what happens when items are recycled and what sort of items they should be putting in the recycling bins.
